Coaching Tips with the Passing Rings
These coaching tips are designed to help improve passing fundamentals, correct common errors,
and help athletes get the most out of their Passing Rings training sessions.
Use them during practices, warm-ups, or individual skill work.
Focus on Quality Over Reps
Do not rush repetitions. The goal is perfect form, not speed. Stop players often to correct posture,
platform angle, and footwork before continuing.
Feet First, Then Platform
Always teach players to move their feet before using their arms. Proper positioning behind the ball
leads to better control and more accurate passes.
Keep the Platform Simple
A strong passing platform is flat, stable, and directed toward the target. Avoid unnecessary arm movement
or overcomplicating technique cues.
Use Short, Focused Drills
5–10 minute focused segments work better than long, unfocused sessions. Rotate drills frequently to
keep attention high and reinforce specific skills.
Correct One Thing at a Time
Do not overload players with too many corrections. Focus on one key improvement per drill
(platform, footwork, or angle control).
Integrate Passing Rings Early
Use Passing Rings at the beginning of training sessions when athletes are fresh.
This helps establish correct muscle memory before game-speed drills. Also explain how the rings are helpful. Here are some key points of reference to mention while Coaching with these Passing Rings:
- Move your feet to the ball whenever possible in order to pass an easier ball and avoid reaching.
- Shoot your platform out, place one hand in the palm of the other hand, and push your thumbs together as the rings click together.
- Then press your thumbs down, and forearms together to create a flat platform. You should be able to see the hidden lines on the rings if you are pushing your thumbs down, and you should NOT be able to see your fingernails over your rings. This helps keep your platform extended, firm, and away from your body.
- Keep your elbows straight as you pass the ball. If the rings disconnect at any time through the pass, then your platform is coming apart. Hold your platform for 2 to 3 seconds after you pass the ball, then you can separate the rings easily.
- Keep your shoulders forward and relaxed.
- Use the angle guidelines on the sides of the rings to help set the angle of your platform toward the target. You should be dropping your shoulder, not turning your wrist when you set your angle. Your extended platform should only turn when you drop your shoulders and never turn through your wrists.
- Avoid swinging your arms at the ball.
- Use your legs to help control the pass.
Build Confidence Through Repetition
Consistency builds confidence. Repeating correct movement patterns helps athletes perform under pressure
in real game situations.
